April 15, 2009 (CAP Newswire) — This April 27, PokerStars, the world’s largest online poker room, will be hosting a special celebrity tournament to benefit Ante Up for Africa, the company announced this week.
Over the past few years, Ante Up for Africa has raised more than $2 million through special events at the World Series of Poker (WSOP), via a series of star-studded celebrity poker tournaments that have included the likes of Charles Barkley, Adam Sandler, Matt Damon, and many others. The charity was founded by popular actor Don Cheadle along with poker superstar Annie Duke, and is designed to raise money for the refugees of Darfur, Sudan.
This year, PokerStars is bringing the successful charity event to a new locale. The timing of the tournament, being held at 6:00 pm on the day before PokerStars’ EPT Montel Carlo Grand Final main event kicks off, is no accident. It’s anticipated that the heightened media coverage for the EPT will provide a nice boost in the Ante Up for Africa charity drive.
Players interested in joining the charity event must qualify for the EPT Monte Carlo via PokerStars satellites and then win a seat during a freeroll final taking place on April 19. For more information on the event, please click here.
