It seems unlikely that the founder of PlanetPoker.com had any idea what they were giving birth to when they launched their site back in 1998. Back then, professional poker players were gruff and worldly types like Doyle Brunson – the Internet changed all that in a heartbeat.
Today’s online poker pros are young whiz kids like Phil Ivey who cut their teeth on video games and Magic the Gathering. This new generation brought poker out of those smoky back rooms and turned it into a massive worldwide business.
While there’s still plenty of tension between Internet players and “real” poker players, it’s pretty clear that Internet poker was a pretty good idea.
