For many years online gambling operators have looked forward to pushing their business into South Africa and exploit a relatively fresh and juicy market. For many years South Africa was considered a prime choice for the iGaming industry as it provided offshore online gambling companies licenses to do business in a stable economy with friendly legislation. However, after years of legalization and criminalization of the activity and of South African delegates discussing legislation with the Gambling Review Commission, the gambling climate changed in South Africa again in 2010 when all forms of gambling, including online gambling, were outlawed.
Nonetheless, contrary to the industry’s expectations, online gambling in South Africa is on the rise and it is estimated to be worth around $136 million a year.
