Winner: British Bookmakers
At the risk of promoting stereotypes, it seems safe to say that the people of the United Kingdom love football and they love wagering on football.
So even though England was out of the hunt pretty early on, UK punters continued wagering at a furious pace. (And in a bit of news that suggest these punters are both enthusiastic, and quite savvy, Paddy Power told the Guardian that only about 10% of the World Cup wagers they took were on England)
All told, the good people of the British Isles dropped slightly over £1 billion ($1.71 billion USD) on World Cup 2014 wagers, which is enough to make it the biggest wagering event in UK history.
