6. UIGEA
In 2006 the US Congress passed a bill called the SAFE PORT Act that was designed to help improve security at US cargo port facilities. Along with preventing foreign ownership of US ports and establishing an number of agencies designed to prevent terrorist attacks.
Thanks to a provision titled, The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) the bill also made sending and receiving money from online gambling a crime.
If you’re having trouble seeing the connection between port security and online betting, you’re not alone. But thanks to some legal trickery from GOP Senators Bill Frist (TN) and Jon Kyl (AZ) the anti-gambling bill was quietly slipped in the SAFE PORT bill.
This same legislation was used to prosecute the players in the Black Friday Case.
Kyl is currently, and unsuccessfully, working with Nevada Senator Harry Reid on Federal poker legislation.
