The once dreary and dead casinos of Atlantic City are teeming with life as New Jersey gaming operators rush to get their sports betting operations online before the start of American football season. It’s a frenzy of activity that’s going to include a tremendous amount of software testing, the building of actual sportsbooks, and plenty of commentary from New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) director, David Redbuck.
According to the Associated Press, Redbuck recently issued a warning to operators that they needed to have their sports betting applications in his office by July 9 or risk missing out on what could be an incredibly lucrative football season for the casinos. “They’ve got to give us a reasonable amount of time to evaluate and test all this,” he told the AP.
Redbuck also warned that software testing for New Jersey sportsbooks would be in the order in which the applications were received. When online gambling was first introduced in the state back in 2013, all the casinos’ software packages were tested simultaneously.
As of this writing, four New Jersey casinos are offering legal sports betting including the Borgata and Ocean Resort casinos in Atlantic City; and Monmouth Park racetrack in Oceanport, and the Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford.
At least another five casinos have entered sports betting applications with the DGE. Of those applications, two are for land-based operations and three are for mobile betting sites. These applications were all received before the July 9 deadline and should be ready for the start of the NFL season on September 5.
