Yup, that’s right. The government of Australia has stepped up and put in regulations making online poker difficult to operate. Sites that once dominated this market will pull out like Pokerstars, 888, and PartyPoker.
Just like all things in life that governments try to control, people will find a way to do what they way. Regulations or not. The most likely scenario is that online poker operators, whose businesses are offshore, will fill in the void left by the brand name publicly traded sites. So all of the sites that provided games to Americans post Black-Friday are going to ramp up their efforts in Australia. Evidence of this can already be seen with Ignition Poker opening up to Aussies, Winning Poker Network ramping up their advertising in AU space, and Intertops offering special tournaments to Aussie players.
EWallets might also decide to bail on Australia in a month when these rules go into effect. If that happens, expect operators to push hard for bitcoin adoption for Australian punters
Australia online poker sites will still exist however, will still flourish, and will still offer real money games to people who want to play. There’s a more lively discussion of this on GPWA if anyone wants to join in.
