As a passenger in a bright red Porsche GT hitting a tree going well over 140 mph made the car an unrecognizable mess of burnt black metal, cleaved in 1/2 by the tree that claimed their lives.
When I was young I went to the movie theater to see the first Fast and the Furious film. We went as a group of 12 of us, you know kids with their dates going to the movies before the internet was big…
I had no idea the whole movie was pretty much about the very car I was driving at the time, a super modified ’94 supra turbo.
She had 400+ bph at the read wheels, and was worked on by me and a master Lexus tech that was into the car and drinking beer with me. I would buy the parts and he would show me how to put them in.
Coming out of that film, stating the ignition of that beast draw a crowd of hundreds of people. Literally the very same car they just watched was right there… Vrooom Vrooom….
For years I drove that girl, with the targa roof off in the summer, and through feet of snow in New Hampshire winters. This is when I meet my wife, in college. They say they could here the supra echoing through the mountains as I came up college road. She was always ready and waiting outside will a little smile, knowing we were going to get our hearts pumping in that very fast Toyota, where we fell even further in love.
Maybe its seeing the world in tunnel vision, maybe its the feel of the engine in my chest when the clutch drops, maybe its the thrill of cheating death that keeps a foot pressing the gas petal, but all rides come to an end…
Rest in peace Mr. Walker and know that your work has meant more than just a fun ride for some of us. God bless.
