What is the background on this?
The home page of google had a link today to a site that started with “Love the free and open Internet” and then went on to say “Some governments want to use a closed-door meeting in December to increase censorship and regulate the Internet”
This petition had 2.6 million signers when I added my ‘own 2 cents worth’.
Being 100% supportive of the concept and cognizant of the remarkable invention and power of a free internet, but always suspicious – does anyone know what the story is here?
(Gawd, I wish I had link on the home page too – how much do you think that would cost?)
United nations is looking to take control of the internet to “make it safe” , Google and most tech companies are against any suich actions. In the role of big goverment one proposal is to “TAX” the sender of data per country. So google sending a result to turkey could cost the .05 centes per request making it unfeasable for google to service traffic in such areas, pretty much censoring by penalizing and taxing. SO someone from argentina would make CAP pay a fee for every visit..
Some day these big goverment people will run out of new taxes to support themselves and greece will be wide spread, you wont be able to get away from it.
Some people are so stupid! They still ‘fall for’ that old ‘safety’ issue of ‘trust me’ ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help you’ routine.
The UN is a great concept, but a flawed institution nonetheless. It has no business being in business. A free internet has already helped ‘take down’ corrupt governments.
I much prefer a ‘unless it’s broken, don’t fix it’ stance.
For whatever motivations, I’m ‘with’ google on this one 110%
(It really ‘burns my biscuits’ when people try to ‘mess with’ a good thing!)

So I see this happening in the next 4-6 years where you will be on a pay per use deal for access.I used to always joke around that one day, the air we breathe will start getting taxed. I don’t know if that joke is far from reality actually lol I think if the world survives long enough, something like this may end up happening
The greedy government is trying to find new ways of taxing anything it can get its hands on. The government incurs debt, the government is too lazy to generate its own income via hard work, so it taxes people. The government is like a big leech, but this big leech has an army behind it, and laws to protect it lolGoverment is geting rich spending your money, whjen it runs out it extracts more money. They do not care they are killing the golden goose of existance of mankind. Repubs and Dems are both killing what made the world great, just Dems are doing it 3X as fast.
The UN wants to take what the US created and give it to the rest of the world that can not manage themselves, so its bad enough we have dems extracting wealth to kill growth, now the UN wants to extraxt more on top.
Look at all the new taxes from obamacare starting in 2013. And they wqant to rais taxes even more before the end of the year.
