The economic news for Las Vegas (and the rest of America’s land-based casino industry) just doesn’t seem to want to improve. The latest report highlights how online gambling could help Vegas, if new regulations are put in place. Read more at the CAP Blog.
I think that online gambling would definitely help Vegas. Vegas is being affected by one of the worse economies in decades. The general migration to online life styles make it a no brainer for Vegas based companies to want to regulate online gambling. Their suffering bottom line will help drive regulation online. For me, it’s not “if” online gaming will be regulated, but “when” and “how”. Will it serve affiliates and existing brands?
Be interesting to see what % of international travellers have dropped.
Macau seems like a better option for Asia then Vegas?
I cannot believe that online gambling has surplanted Vegas gambling. People who go to Vegas, are going for the atmosphere and the “experience”. Online gambling in your pajamas from home, does not surplant that. What is effecting business in Las Vegas is our economy (which still stinks), and the cost of gas, which has become prohibitive. I know revenue is down in Vegas, but I just saw on some list where the Sands stock has had the 2nd biggest year of any equity in the U.S. stock market – so, revenue may be down, but profit is still up (probably due to cost cutting moves).
So if this is true and now that players cannot play poker at fulltilt or pokerstars in America, does this mean Las Vegas is going to be flooded with more gamblers and earn more money?
The answer is probably no. Less players on these sites means less interest in the world series of poker.

Should I go to Vegas this weekend, naw I’m gonna go online to Full Tilt, I mean Come on!
If your going to say The Indiana Reservations cut into Veags, that I might buy into, but really, not even that. They turned it into Disneyland. Then the initial thrill from people who could now have their kids entertaind there wore off. Now those same families realize it’s cheaper taking kiddies to Florida. Vegas stopped catering to the gamblers and thought they could make money selling cotton candy and it did work….for awhile.
What Grem said “Less players on these sites means less interest in the world series of poker” is also Right On the money.
That idea that online gaming is taking away from Vegas is BS.
This is a pretty interesting argument. I wonder if it has to do with more people gambling online? But the experience of being at home and gambling doesn’t compare to being at Vegas. Maybe the world is experiencing a recession everywhere and in every market.
