hi
just wondered what is the weight of a site listed as signature in forum at google point of view. what i mean is lets say i opend a thread and had a wide discussion over there (for a real important subject- not for just posting my signature)- will google consider it as spam? and is it considers as one link or several links? i want to understand if chating in a forum with my site signature doesnt heart my sites seo.January 21, 2010 at 2:38 am #807644baitemanMemberMost forums use rel=”nofollow” on outbound links so if this is the case then there is no value to the link other than traffic it may send to the site. If it is a clean link you may receive a little link equity.

Thanks for the reply. But what I meant by my question- is it better to remove my signature when U chat in threads? if I am interesting of understanding something and I go into threads for answers, isnt the signatures with links considers in google as spam? Its not about the link, its about my sites staying clean and of quality.

If however you send two bots to talk to eachother, both with links to your sites and they post 1,000 times per day in 10 forums… you might find yourself in trouble.
January 21, 2010 at 3:23 pm #807680AnonymousInactiveI have done extensive posting for some 8 years, and in my experience google only counts one link per forum as having weight, even if they show all the links in the google webmaster section.

Perhpas I’m wrong, but I thought I noticed that that when I change my sig. it also changes it in older topic replies. So if you removed it to make a bunch of posts and then added it back in a later post all your posts would have it.
perhaps admin can verify that this is actually the case.
January 24, 2010 at 7:10 pm #807748baitemanMemberI’m pretty sure this is the way it works. Every post will be dynamically updated, not just the individual post.
January 25, 2010 at 4:11 pm #807781arturs.vitolsMemberThat is correct. I have actually tested to see how much weight my signatures carried in a forum where I have a few hundred posts. I changed the anchor text to a page slightly and saw my site increase for the new term based solely on that.
I doubt one link one do that, so I have to conclude that Google counts anchor text from signatures.
It might be cool to have someone with a few thousand posts do something similar.

For what you are talking about there is no concern for having multiple links in signatures on forums, especially if you are indeed the one discussing a topic.
As for multiple links on one site, there is a degrading effect. One link gives you most of the juice that Google will pass from one site to another, but you can squeeze a little bit more juice out of a website with a second and third link. Eventually there is no more juice to be had from a single domain. Of course if a forum topic becomes popular enough that other websites link directly to it, that page with your link on it will gain more juice and make your link even stronger.
