    Hi all,

I’ve been doing a fair bit of research into link directories over the last couple of days, and I seem to have run into a couple of grey areas regarding how they work. I could do with some advice from someone a bit more experienced than me:

    1. Google must know that certain URLs are selling links (usually in an auction style). Now Google’s not keen on people selling links, so does that mean all sites listed on those directories get punished? Or does Google consider it ok to purchase link in some cases?

    2. As mentioned, a lot of directories work on a bid basis. But from an SEO point of view, is there really a whole lot of difference whether your site is listed at the top of a PR4 page or the bottom of one? Why pay $250 to be in the top two spots, when you can be on the same page 10 or 15 places further down for £30?

Thanks guys – much appreciated …

    1. nobody knows whether google understands buying links in certain case or not. if there are just links – maybe.
    2. in general the more you’r in the top of the page – the better. But I wouldn’t buy top position for sure. :sarcasm:

    1) My understanding is that Google doesn’t like link buying, but it happens all the time (there is a forum here, and every where else for that purpose). Google runs a very gray line in that they state they are against link buying, but don’t have any issues with websites “accepting a reviewing fee”. Google does know certain websites sell links, about 6 months ago, many top directories had their pageranks set to 0. I don’t think Google penalizes sites for being on directories, if they did, competitors could attack each other by placing each others sites on penalized directories.

    2) Bid directories – There are only two advantages that I know of for being in the top spots. The first is that most bid directories give the top spot a sitewide link. The second is if it ranks well for terms in your industry. If it ranks well for casino, poker, bingo, sportsbetting terms and is well search engine optimized, you might make money from the traffic it sends you, especially if you can get away with a cheap bid for a top spot on a sub-page with some traffic. If your on a PR4 page, your on a PR4 page, for pagerank purposes it doesn’t matter.

Be wary of brand new high PR bid directories with strange domain names completely unrelated they tend to be dropped domains and a lot of times they loose all their PR at the next Google update.

Google just went through knocking down a ton of sites that were doing paid links, I think they are aware of the main sites that do it.

I still apply to geographically related directories. I try to find as many UK directories for my websites that offer content specifically for the UK. I do this for two reasons. The first is the potential traffic from UK residents, and second is because I believe that the the SE’s will factor geographical relevance with where my sites are hosted, and where my incoming links are coming from.

It’s important to have global link popularity, if you have too many links coming from the same ip classes it could damage you. Make sure you have a good mix.

    Interesting thread.

I recently listed my site in some “paid for” directories I think, (I hope!) they all fit under the ‘review fee’ style of submission.

What are the “must have” directories?
Does anyone advise on which directorys to steer clear of?
Has anyone managed to get accepted by Yahoo? My site was rejected!
