Gas or gamble? Economy forces some to choose
Yahoo! Buzz Digg Newsvine Reddit FacebookWhat’s this?By Gary Stoller, USA TODAY
Carlos Bueno and his wife, Mayra, drove three times last year from their home in Houston to a casino in Lake Charles, La., but they won’t be making the two-hour drive this summer.
“Gas prices are the main reason,” says the 32-year-old father of three children who works for a utility company and also is canceling the family’s annual vacation to the Dominican Republic. “The economy is harsh right now, and the little money saved for vacation will have to be spent on fuel for our vehicle.”UP, UP, UP: Gas average expected to hit $3.73 a gallon in June
Bueno says he spent about $1,500 on his casino trips last year, and it costs about $70 a week to fill the gas tank of his Nissan Altima.
The pressures of a weak economy — concerns about job security and rising prices for gas, food, home heating oil and other goods and services — are causing many gamblers to cancel or reduce the number of casino trips. Those who go are gambling less money than in the past: At the traditional gambling Meccas of Atlantic City and Las Vegas, and in other states, casino revenue is down. Employees are being laid off, and there’s concern about future growth.

May 13, 2008 at 3:55 am #767711affiliategodMemberThanks bonustreak for this post. The economy is totally out of control. I am not sure what is worse, the price of gas or the price of milk which I am totally addicted to. I can’t eat a meal without it. Needless to say, I stay home more then I go out. Sry, lubs me my milk. Milk and animal crackers. Yea, I’m a big kid.lol Strange priorities, huh?lol
May 13, 2008 at 7:34 am #767713AnonymousInactiveGas prices are seriously crazy. My sisters significant other brings up gas every time she takes the five minute drive to my house.
Additionally, Every time someone says something like ‘gas hit $3.xx today’, my brain wants to correct them and say no you mean.. 2.xx right?..
No one is going to boycott driving. Or that’s what they said a few years ago, but as it turns out, my thighs are a bit on the thick side anyway, so I bought a bicycle. Won’t be boycotting, hell I own an SUV, but i’ll be supplementing.
As to the question, gas or gambling. Buy the damn gas man! As if it were ever a question. If you can play poker and win, then you’re not gambling, earn gas money. If you’re gambling, get the gas, then do the gambling . Long walk home from the casino.
Or better yet, yknow.. stay home. Gamble online.

May 13, 2008 at 7:44 pm #767761AnonymousInactivewanna trade.. only 3,xx for a gallon..
Quick math..
1 gallon is about 5 litre (0,21 gallon = 1 litre)
1 litre gas is about 1,50euro is about $2,30
so 5 litre (or one gallon) equals about $11,50
thank G I have a small car with low fuel comsumption..
