Hi and thank you in advance for your reply.
I know this is silly and probably only I could find myself in such a place to have to ask this question but … what do you think the SEs think of a page which is
xxx.domain.com/anyname/index.htmand then having another index named
xxx.domain.com/anyname/index.html
if there is different content on both … do you think it is just viewed as two separate pages and no chance of getting penalized for that?
I’ve managed to get some of my files with an index named both .htm and .html .. and I can’t remember which pages or PPC campaigns etc might be linked to which page? In other words its possible i have links going to both extensions.
so its best if I leave both up to cover any possibility but that would not be true if it is going to get me penalized.
thanks again
S.

i would consider that as a major problem…..
try to find out wich index is getting the most links and remove the other one
or redirect one to another in the .htaccess
March 29, 2008 at 1:45 pm #764530AnonymousInactiveIn most cases the .html page that will be the default. Depending on how your host has set up their server, only 1 of the 2 pages will be used and the other will be completely ignored.
I think if you put a index.html file and index.htm file on the server, the index.html file will show up as the homepage.
Look at your stats and see if .htm has ever been accessed.
The 3 character extension is a carryover from the DOS days when a filename could only be 8 characters for the name and 3 characters for the extension. (for backwards compatibility with older computers/browsers)

If being concerned, just put this meta tag on one of the pages:
March 30, 2008 at 1:41 am #764566AnonymousGuestI’ve been thinking about what E said … or rather how he must have looked when he made his post.
I picture E sitting at his PC with a look of horror thinking to himself … “this guy may actually find a way to physically hurt himself while working online!”.
thanks again all.
March 30, 2008 at 6:58 pm #764603LucretiaMembersometimes I think to start over and write it all in php but I do not have the time for it now. I hate it to change the menulinks on al pages every time I add something new. But I should have RTFM beforehand. :3eyes:
Yes it can be very frustrating to learn it all,
