Having done a quick search on Google to see what TLD South Africa used, I thought all domains ended in co.za. However, on a few Domain Registrars I can only find .za.com.

Are they both South African TLDs? Which one is more common? And can anyone suggest a good (cheap) place to buy them from?

    Thanks,

    Try these Guys: Hetzner

.co.za is the more popular one.

    Thanks ixian.

Are they popular? I mean is the co.za TLD the extension of maybe the .co.uk address in Britain?

Are South Africans comfortable with co.za address or do they expect all their domains to end in .com?

If you are targeting South Africans use the .co.za TLD. All top South African online businesses and banks use this TLD.

If you are targeting a more global market, including South Africans, then use a .com TLD.

    Never heard of za.com.

Like others have mentioned, .co.za is the official South African TLD. You can buy these domains directly from xhttp://co.za, although the process is really low tech compared to Godaddy. The cost is R150 for the first year, and thereafter R50 per year. The exchange rate is currently R6.74 to the USD, but this is volatile and changes daily.

One of the requirements before you register your domain is to set it up in a DNS server somewhere before you buy, otherwise it wont register. This can be quite frustrating and isn’t exactly logical, but its one of the things i have learn’t to live with. To avoid frustration, you may wan’t to pay a bit more and go through a hosting company like Hetzner(a German company with an SA office).

I just checked with the Hetzner website domain registration only is R79.00
and annual renewal R49.00, the entire process is all online.

There are hosting plans which can be used when required.

I’ve used cozahost.com in the past…straightforward process and helpful support…a little more expensive than those mentioned already but still reasonably priced
