Hey all
I’m posting this here to let everyone know to regularly change passwords etc.
I have just found out that someone has tried taking $7000 from my bank account (verified by paypal) and some have gone through.
The bank wont do anything about it because I have willingly given Paypal my bank account details so it’s now up to paypal to set things right.
Since the office doesn’t open until 10am here I am stuck waiting for them to open until I can call them.
They got about $1300, not to mention the $405 of dishonour fees I owe to my bank for the transactions that didn’t go through.
Anyway the point is that everyone should regularly change their passwords and make sure you always check your accounts… I didn’t even receive emails about the transactions going through until the final one was pending. And that’s still the only notification I got of money being transferred from my paypal account.

January 31, 2007 at 2:42 pm #725097AnonymousGuestHi Renee,
that really sucks! I wish I had something to say to be of help but sadly all I can offer is my empathy.
I truly hope paypal makes this right for you.
January 31, 2007 at 3:42 pm #725108AnonymousInactiveThat sucks!
Paypal sucks, I wish you luck! I have had to dispute 2 paypal payments from eBay purchases, where the seller robbed me(i sent payment they didn’t send product). I know its different, but paypal was very little help, I could never get a real person to talk to. I have never been compensated for my loss (received small partial payments)
I also once had my bank account drained of a few thousand through a Venezuelan cash machine. My bank covered the loss the same day, I filled out 20-30 forms (one for each transaction) and signed an affidavit that I hadn’t left the country in 90 days.
I hope you get all your money back!
Also do not just change your passwords, make them hard! Use no less then 8 characters. Use a special symbol (ie:!,@,#,$,%,etc.). Use at least 1 capital letter 1 lowercase letter and 1 number. Do not use words that you can find in a dictionary, or names (including pets names). If you follow these rule you will have a very safe password (just don’t tell anyone, or use it in more then one place!).

I’m so careful with passwords etc. and yes ih82lose, i did everything you mentioned below. No words, included numbers and symbols with capitals etc and didn’t use the password anywhere else. I haven’t even logged into the account since November ffs.
I called paypal yesterday as soon as they opened and the guy on the phone said he would contact my bank and have the dishonour fees taken care of as well as refund the money back to my bank account.
Since there wasn’t enough money in the account, most of it has been refunded, apart from the transactions that were actually processed, which I’m still waiting on. Who knows how long it will be til they are returned.
I officially hate financial institutions.
February 1, 2007 at 1:37 am #725202AnonymousGuestreally happy to hear they’re being honorable about the situation.
quite frankly I’m very surprised.
ironically I did have a password that was likely very easy to bust. Not anymore. of course, now that I’ve changed it to something hard, I probably will have trouble. if nothing else, I probably won’t remember the damn thing.
anyhow, happy it is working out for you. Could have been much worse a scenario.
February 1, 2007 at 1:38 am #725203AnonymousInactiveYou’re right, however I’m not going to sing until I see all that money back in my account. It makes me want to cry
February 2, 2007 at 3:12 am #725418AnonymousInactiveAww Renee, I’m so sorry to hear all this. It’s a lousy feeling in a sometimes lousy world. Thanks for the reminder on the pws. I hope it all works out for you and wish I could help…. :banger:
Chin up!
MojoFebruary 2, 2007 at 6:35 am #725436AnonymousInactiveI had the same thing happen to me about 3 months ago. PayPal found the company was from India and got all my money returned in less than a week. When you check on your payment processors, I suggest that you use Firefox rather than IE.
February 9, 2007 at 12:57 am #726631AnonymousInactiveThanks so much for the heads up bleuze. It makes a difference knowing that it will most likely be sorted soon.
I reported it 8 days ago now and am still waiting. Hopefully it’s sorted by Monday. I hate not having control over my finances. I can’t even access my savings!February 20, 2007 at 10:55 pm #728124AnonymousInactiveThought I should post the results….
Late last week I finally got my money back from the unauthorized transactions, however paypal shortchanged me. They paid me 200USD instead of 265AUD. So I had to call them. They also refused to refund the dishonour fees given by my bank ($495 in total).
I called my bank and they told me that Paypal needed to write me a letter to send to the bank explaining what had happened etc. So they were pretty efficient in doing that – letter was sent the same day (only they didn’t include the full number of transactions). I requested that paypal change it for me but got no reply (and still none to this day mind you), so I changed it myself and faxed it to my bank with all the documentation. Within a few days all the dishonour fees had been refunded by my bank.
When all this happened I also went into my bank to report the transactions. I received a letter yesterday telling me that they have refunded $1600 of the transactions back to my account. This is strange because the only one that went through was the 265AUD one. The rest bounced because there was no money in my account. I’m not sure why they wouldn’t check my account for those things but I guess I should just leave the money there in case they decide to take it back.
Anyhow I thought i’d post the outcome. I’m very surprised with Paypal. I really didn’t think i’d get anything back. I’m disappointed in the time it took though and that they told me they would refund my dishonour fees then refused to after 3 people told me they would.
Anyhow the lesson here is to always change your password. I would also recommend the keychain number password thing that Paypal now offers. It changes your password every 10 seconds or something and you can only log in if you have the number display.
Cheers
February 21, 2007 at 6:50 am #728179AnonymousInactiveI am glad it all worked out, but it sure is an experience to avoid.
March 9, 2007 at 10:42 am #730171AnonymousInactiveGive it back. (Minus a considderable conveniance fee for your troubles.) It seems that banks CAN and WILL have ways to get thier money back anyways. Please give the money back. You will thank me one day for telling you this. They could take it any time. They have the technology, the power, the lawyers, and blackest of hearts. They will get it back! And it’s not going to be when you can afford to pay it back, or when you get around to it. It will be when you absolutely need it the most. And they will not even warn you before they screw up your credit. TRUST ME it has happened.
On the other hand, do you really want these idiots taking care of your money?? If not close the account as soon as you can, and get a new bank lol
Best wishes from Kurt

I logged into my paypal account and realised that the money in my bank is from a chargeback that the bank did to my paypal account. So it all evened out in the end anyway.
I would have given it back if not for that anyway – I guess nothing beats honesty
Thanks for the messages!
