BRUSSELS (Reuters) – U.S. restrictions on online gambling may be challenged by the European Union, the bloc’s top financial regulator said on Tuesday.
“In my view it is probably a restrictive practice and we might take it up in another fora,” EU Internal Market Commissioner Charlie McCreevy told the European Parliament.
The United States was protecting its own gambling industry by stopping foreign companies from entering the online betting sector, McCreevy said.

January 30, 2007 at 8:03 pm #724985AnonymousInactiveIf the US Government would stand back and look at all the groups of civilized people in opposition to their stance then maybe a little voice in their heads could tell them they’re wrong…
Of course, if they won’t listen to the voters, why would they listen to little voices…

January 31, 2007 at 2:27 am #725031AnonymousInactiveRarely does the U.S Government bend its’ policies due to outside pressure. They don’t have a problem inflicting the rest of the globe with their ethnocentric policies. But being told by another country what is fair and unfair, not a chance of them listening.

January 31, 2007 at 10:03 pm #725169AnonymousInactiveHere is another story about the same thing:
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601205&sid=aJZPxs9Z1bMQ&refer=consumerThis sounds good:
The U.S. is discriminating against foreign gambling companies by banning payments to betting Web sites, said Charlie McCreevy, commissioner for the European Union’s internal market.
I don’t really get what he is saying here…
“It is probably a restrictive practice and we might take it up in another forum,” McCreevy said at the EU Parliament’s Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee.
Asked by journalists afterward if that referred to a World Trade Organization complaint, McCreevy said, “The WTO talks have enough to be going on with at the present time without adding this in. It’s not something that has major momentum.”
But at least they are thinking about things…..
I hope they hurry, my children will be hungry soon.

Good Spin, but its not entirely true. protecting it’s own gambling industry, more than likely, true.
However, stopping foreign companies from entering the online betting sector, doubtful. Foreign companies can have all the online gambling they want they just can’t suck money out of the USA to do it.

Hounestly, has this McCreevy forgotten that more then half the members of EU have monopolies in their own country?
I don’t see this getting anywhere before they clean up their own act firstFebruary 12, 2007 at 1:31 am #726880AnonymousInactiveQuote:I second that, but am definitely not volunteering.Dom might do rude things behind a bush but not to a bush! :chearlead
The EU probably would make no impact…any move needs to come from within the US itself, but the US govt seems to be spiralling out of control…where are the legal reigns on madmen?
A friend introduced me to karmabanque.com radio show and the first I listened to detailed how the charges against Saddam were equally applicable to Bush. The scary bit is they are dead right. Also their youtube video on the front page about the dollar is a bit disturbing. :whoa:

Eventually the idiots in control over here will realize that people are becoming informed and if they dont get their hineys in gear we will vote them out of office!
