Yesterday I was checking some of the keywords I am optimizing for and I noticed we had the first position on MSN, but then I went to check on Google and our pages are nowhere to be seen for those keywords, is this a matter of time or are the algorithms so different? The optimization was done for the keyphrase casino affiliate

Time helps with Google – the age of a site carries a higher importance than on other SE’s by all accounts. But, the main reason is the algo’s are very, very different. Its easier to rank on MSN and Yahoo, probably because more of what you do “on page” is taken into account whereas Google takes in more “off page” factors of which you have less control over. Incoming links still appears to be a very high priority in Google, though personally I think this is a poor reason for higher SERPS…it just leads to more spam IMO.

I agree with what Simmo said. Just adding in the fact that Google also has the sandbox effect which seems to be a matter of time and some other triggers which are needed to allow your site to rank for highly competitive keywords. With over 20 months of work, we rank on the first page in Yahoo for several keywords, but nowhere on Google thanks to the sandbox and their every changing algorithm.
