I want to get really good at this. I have a lot to learn. What’s the best and fastest way to get good at this? I don’t have 40 hours a week to spend on it – I’m looking for some sort of book or course – some current and quality information on it. I need some guidance. Thanks.
April 25, 2006 at 3:44 am #689939AnonymousInactiveI highly recommend Aarron Walls SEO Book.
April 25, 2006 at 3:45 am #689940AnonymousInactiveI’ve been learning about it for 5 years.
Let me know when you find a book or course with the best answers please ..
I’ll borrow it after you.
:rollover:I’m not sure that there is a definative short cut to this knowledge Cowboy – start learning and see what you find.
April 25, 2006 at 4:26 am #689941AnonymousInactiveI second pokermonger’s suggesstion – Aaron Wall’s SEO eBook (http://www.seobook.com). It helps to have this fundamental knowledge before learning more advanced techniques.
April 25, 2006 at 5:05 am #689943AnonymousInactiveThanks a lot guys, I’ll check that out! :hattip:
April 25, 2006 at 5:55 am #689944AnonymousInactiveI suppose you can learn the basics in a reasonable amount of time. You will quickly learn that you need to spend a lot of time on SEO, so while you don’t need 40hrs a week, a good chunk of time will be needed if you wish to be successful. I’ll add the seochat.com forum as a good resource, but plan on spending quite a bit of time reading if you go there.

A trawl around WebMasterWorld’s Google forums is good, but will just highlight the fact that it is largely speculative and “best guess”. That said, there are some very sound basics you can learn.
This is how I see it.
I think there are essentially two levels of SEO. “Basic” and “Advanced”. The principles of Basic SEO can be picked up relatively quickly, though it doesn’t necessarily it’s easy to implement, particularly if your site is already designed and running. Basic SEO should ensure you are in the engines and get niche SERPS i guess.
Advanced SEO is required for the big positions on major keywords. Much trickier and a whole lot more speculative. Strategies that work today maybe won’t work tomorrow, so this is when it becomes a much more demanding job and you will need the time for it, if only to keep abreast of changes, updates and current research.
Cheers

April 25, 2006 at 6:45 pm #690015AnonymousInactiveThanks a lot for the helpful suggestions.
I just purchased the Aaron Wall book you guys recommended. It looks great, and appears to be just what I was looking for. Thanks!
April 25, 2006 at 6:55 pm #690017vladcizsolMemberseochat and search engine watch are also good resources for learning.
April 30, 2006 at 4:49 pm #690527AnonymousInactiveOk, so I bought this book and printed it out. The stack of paper is about 2 inches high.
I’m 1/3 the way through the book so far – it’s really excellent, and just what I was looking for. Thanks again for the recommendation.
If anybody is looking for this type of information, it does seem like this book is one of the best resources for it.
April 30, 2006 at 6:47 pm #690535AnonymousInactiveI agree there is a lot of information out there on seo, perhaps too much. This is what bogles the mind is the confusion. There are some standards and guidelines to follow but do not get bogged down by information overload.
I found the SE’s webmasters guidelines very useful. For every term/word you do not understand look it up. Its one thing to know quite another to understand.
But Seo takes time get a handle on it and it changes all the time. Some elements are constant which is good. Goodluck with the read and concentrate on the information at hand. Jumping around too much seeking other sources in my opinion will render your seo knowledge useless. greek39

May 2, 2006 at 5:01 am #690696AnonymousInactiveHey Thakore, did you get it too?
Wow, it’s really great. I’m 2/3 the way through. I’ve learned a ton. At first I thought it was expensive, but it’s completely worth it. Props to the author!

May 28, 2006 at 10:10 pm #693503AnonymousInactiveQuick followup…
There was an SEO speaker at CAP: Scottie Claiborne from Right Click Web Consulting. Here is her bio. Apparently she has a lot of credibility and she is clearly quite bright.
In any case, I had just finished SEO Book when I saw her speak, and I have to say that I felt like already knew pretty much everything she had to say from reading Aaron Wall’s book – and the things she was saying totally squared with what Aaron says, which I found to be reassuring.
