Hi and thank you in advance for your reply.

I currently have a site hosted with someplace that experiences too much down time, although it isn’t a lot, its too much for my taste.

How does the dns stuff work? I know usually you add two : something like dnsserver1.mysite.com
    dnsserver2.mysite.com

if my site doesn’t show up when someone types it in, because of the server being down, if I added in the other two boxes of the dns ,

    dnsserver1.myothersite.com
    dnsserver2.myothersite.com

in other words, if I entered the dns info of one of my other sites in box 3,4, would if the first server were down, would it automatically send the traffic to my other site?

    Thanks

    S.

If I understand your post right it won’t work.

The domain name servers are usually something like this:

    ns.(server name).com
    ns2.(server name).com

Your sites (url) are assigned to certain domain name servers from the get go. Some hosting providers have plans where you can put more than one domain on the same server/hosting plan but you will have to see if your host allows that. I have one hosting provider that does that and added a second site this way. The other ones I use don’t offer this.

I know it sounds like a pain but I switch hosting providers if there is ever a consistent problem with down time. I am in no way affiliated with the following provider, and you are probably not looking for a new one, but out of all the ones I’ve tried and currently use, I would highly recommend Verve Hosting. I don’t think I’ve had anything more than 15 minutes down time in about 10 months with them. And I was able to easily switch an established site from GoDaddy over to them. Just in case you’re interested.
