Online bookie blames warning on US morality

Online bookmaker Betonsports yesterday blamed outgoing United States attorney-general John Ashcroft for a savage profits warning which saw the value of the company halved.

Chief executive David Carruthers accused Mr Ashcroft of “trying to impose his morality on the rest of the US” after demands from the St Louis Justice Department resulted in the company’s advertisements being taken off the air by radio stations across the US. That resulted in a sharp slowdown in the sign up of customers.
