Phillipines’ region shuts down online casino

In the Philippines, the recently elected Mayor of the San Juan province is starting a crack down on online gambling. He has just shut down an online casino and other internet gambling sites based within the region, and is promising to prevent any future sites from starting up. Mayor JV Ejercito, the son of the Philippines deposed President Joseph Estrada, has taken this decision, despite the money the ventures earn the municipality. His stance conflicts with that of the Filipino government, and is a reaction to what he sees as being their permissive stance on gambling.
The E-Casino Filipino which has branches both in San Juan and Pasiq City, has been shut down in both locations. Associates of Ejercito are currently checking if the online casino has the same owners in both sites. The council for the municipality has passed regulations that now prohibit all forms of gambling within the region. Anyone found acting against this order will now be fined, and possibly face imprisonment. First time offenders will be fined P1,000 and face six hours of community service. These punishments increase to P1500 and 10 hours community service for second time offenders, and P2500 and possibly up to 30 days imprisonment for third time offenders.
Ejercito released the following comments explaining his recent actions: “We will not also grant a permit to those who are planning to put up a gambling business in San Juan…It seems that this [Arroyo] administration is promoting a culture of gambling…We will continue to close down gambling parlours in the municipality to put an end to this menace.”
