Tulane.edu to offer Online Casino Degrees
If you thought Universities only offered degrees in arts, engineering, sciences and business, then there’s more. Uc.tulane.edu or Tulane University College of Biloxi has announced plans to start a casino/resort management degree program in January 2004. South Mississippi casino executives believe this long-awaited program will boost the industry, and make it easier for the 15,000 gambling employees in South Mississippi.
The casino industry believes, having formal qualifications will help casino employees to move up the corporate ladder into management jobs, besides helping women and minorities says Bernie Burkholder, President and CEO of Treasure Bay Casino in Biloxi.
Early this summer, Tulane started offering an introduction to casino resort management class. Seeing the demand for such courses, the University, set up the new degree program. Tulane University College will offer two-year associate degrees, besides minors and post-degree certificates in casino/resort management, with plans to start comprehensive online courses on casino management.
‘The Tulane curriculum is unique outside of Nevada in that it provides a series of connected classes based on sound academic principles,’ says Richard Marksbury, Dean of University College. Russell Schenck, a shift manager at Casino Magic Biloxi, who took the summer course this year and is now enrolling for the degree program. He aspires to be casino general manager and believes degrees like these will help him in the direction.
Jeff Prusinowski, VP of Casino operations for Treasure Bay, is making it mandatory for all his Casino managers to take one course a year at Tulane.
Three courses in the Tulane University College casino/resort management program will be offered in the spring semester, which begins Jan. 14: introduction to casino and resort management, casino math and statistics and addictive behavior and gambling, and the tuition fees start at $695 for a three-credit course.
