Internet Casinos Held to Ransom
Further to a report last week that hackers had attacked Wordplay.com, it has emerged that up to six online businesses have been brought down by unknown assailants who are demanding £50,000 to leave them alone. While the identity of the cyber mobsters cannot be confirmed, speculation is growing that the Russian Mafia, who attacked a number of sites in the US last September demanding £24,000, could be involved.
The specific nature of Internet bookshops makes them vulnerable to extortion and all too willing to pay. If a customer cannot place a bet exactly when he needs to he will simply go to a competitor resulting in high financial losses for the company. The National High Tech Crime Unit, however have urged companies not to give in to the racquets pointing out that payment is no guarantee that they will be left unmolested. All sites are urged to upgrade their IT defences.
